Why Does Mexico Get Earthquakes

Map of earthquakes in Mexico from 1900 to 2022

Location of G 8.0+ earthquakes in Mexico with year of occurrence

This is a fractional list of earthquakes in Mexico. This list considers every notable earthquake felt or with its epicenter within Mexico's current borders and maritime areas.

Geology [edit]

Mexico lies within two seismically active earthquake zones. The Baja California peninsula lies virtually the boundary of the Pacific Plate and the Northward American Plate, while southern Mexico lies only north of the boundary betwixt the N American Plate and the Cocos and Rivera tectonic plates. The Cocos Plate is subducting nether the Northward American Plate at a rate of 67 mm (0.220 ft) per yr, while the Pacific and Rivera plates are moving northwest relative to the Northward American Plate. Southern United mexican states as well contains numerous faults, which causes that section of the country to take high tectonic action. Northeastern Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula are not as seismically active every bit the area close to the boundary between the North American and Cocos plates, but destructive earthquakes can even so occur in those areas.

Stover & Coffman 1993 uses various seismic scales. MLa is a local magnitude that is equivalent to KL (Richter magnitude scale) and is used for events that occurred prior to the instrumental menses. It is based on the area of perceptibility (every bit presented on isoseismal maps). Thouw = moment magnitude scale and One thousands = surface wave magnitude. The inclusion criteria for adding events are based on WikiProject Earthquakes' notability guideline that was developed for stand up alone articles. The principles described are too applicable to lists. In summary, merely damaging, injurious, or deadly events should exist recorded.
